Cognition And Communication Impairment Disorders

Neurological conditions can present with problems with communication (the exchange of information), speech (the actual motor verbalization) and cognition (thinking skills.) Speech-language pathology can work on the expressive (output) and receptive (understanding information) language with therapy using pictures and sometimes a communication device to aid in communication. This doesn’t prevent verbal communication, which also benefits from therapy. For cognitive impairment, speech therapy, neuropsychology evaluation and educational support can be of benefit.

Most neurological conditions can’t be cured, but treatment will often improve a child’s capabilities. In general, the earlier treatment begins, the better chance children have of overcoming impairments or learning new ways to accomplish the tasks that challenge them. There is no standard therapy that works for every child.
