What is a Pediatric Physiatrist?

Physical medicine and rehabilitation for children

Sometimes illness, injury or chronic conditions limit function. A pediatric physiatrist works with children to maximize their abilities. They diagnose patients and develop treatment plans to improve function, ease of movement, comfort and quality of life.

A pediatric physiatrist is a physician with specialized training in physical medicine and rehabilitation with additional fellowship training in the care of children. They are doctors who practice the nonsurgical treatment of injuries and illnesses that affect movement in children due to conditions with:

  • Nerves
  • Muscles
  • Bones
  • Brain
  • Spinal cord
